Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will not contest elections for Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Standing Committee Chairman in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and will support the Shiv Sena instead. Fadnavis said that the BJP will vote for Shiv Sena's mayoral nominee as it wants the people of Mumbai to govern their city.
“We will not put up a candidate for Mayor or Deputy Mayor for BMC. We will not be in the opposition, we will support the ruling party but will not compromise on transparency,” Fadnavis was quoted by The Financial Times as saying.
On the issue of transparency in BMC, the Chief Minister said the state government will appoint a Deputy Lokayukta to the BMC and will also create a committee to study different aspects of civic governance and transparency. Fadnavis emphasised that Mumbai voted for transparency.
It is now clear that the next Mayor will be from Shiv Sena, which won 84 seats in the BMC elections held last week. The BJP was right behind with 82.

Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
