Rajiv Nayan Choubey, ex-Civil Aviation Secretary, took over as a member of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on 1 February (Friday). The UPSC is the central recruitment body which conducts civil services examination to select the country's bureaucrats, police officers and diplomats.
Choubey is a 1981-batch (retired) IAS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre. He superannuated on 31 January (Thursday) after attaining the age of 60.
In his career which spanned over a period of 35 years, he held several important positions in the government of Tamil Nadu as well as in the central government. He became the Civil Aviation Secretary in June 2015 and was administered the oath of office and secrecy by UPSC chairman Arvind Saxena as reported by Times of India.
Choubey’s appointment is in its full strength because as per the rules, a member of the UPSC can have a maximum of six-year tenure or till an incumbent attains the age of 65.
Earlier, he served as Development Commissioner (Handloom) in the Ministry of Textiles, Joint Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Director General in the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons and Special Secretary, Ministry of Power.
