Kerala's Governor, P Sathasivam, who is a former chief justice, is staring ahead at an awkward, difficult situation. He has to appoint a man he convicted, politician R Balakrishna Pillai, as chairman of the State Forward Communities’ Welfare Corporation.
As per a Live Law report, Sathasivam, along with Justice B S Chauhan (presently Chairman of the Law Commission of India), had convicted Kerala politician Pillai and sentenced him to imprisonment for a year with a fine of Rs 10,000 in a case of corruption in the Idamalayar Hydroelectric Power Project.
The decision to appoint Pillai as chairman of the Welfare Corporation will not be an easy one for Sathasivam. Pillai, on the other hand, has the Left government in Kerala to thank for his appointment despite his criminal antecedents.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
