A new broad gauge electrified railway line in Chhattisgarh has been approved by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday (26 September). This project will be done through a first-of-its-kind joint-venture between the state and the centre, reported the Financial Express.
The 294 km-long Katghora-Dongargar line will cost an estimated Rs 5,950 crore. Chattisgarh Katghora-Dongarhgarh Railway Limited - a special purpose vehicle (SPV) of the Indian railways, Chattisgarh Railway Corporation Limited (CRCL) and various other private stakeholders has been formed for the purpose. CRCL is a joint venture on 49:51 basis between Indian Railways and Chhattisgarh government.
Rajnandgaon, Kabirdham, Mungeli, Bilaspur and Korba will be the districts to get benefit of this project. This new line will provide a route for the movement of freight through the busy Jharsuguda-Nagpur section of Mumbai-Howrah route ensuring industrial development in the unserved areas. This route will also help the freight movement to avoid busy yards of Bilaspur, Champa and Durg stations.
As the Raigarh district (Raigarh-Mand) opens up to coal mining, there are expectations that in future coal mining will be increased by South Eastern Coalfields Ltd and other end user miners from the present 150 million tons per annum (mtpa) to 250 mtpa.
This new line will add 30-35 mtpa capacity to the railways system which amounts to three percent of railways’ current output.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
