The 24X7 life is now very Bengaluru. And the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike is not one to be left behind when it comes to capitalising on a revenue-earning possibility, according to a Times of India report. With working professionals now active throughout the day, the municipal body wants public transport facilities to function round-the-clock.
The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) wraps up its services by 11pm while Namma Metro operations close at 10.30 pm.
At a meeting convened on Saturday to discuss the issue, Mayor R Sampath Raj urged the two transport corporations to consider functioning round-the-clock in public interest. “When outstation buses function throughout the night, why shouldn’t city buses,” he asked.
In a rare concern for “late night” party-goers, the mayor said round- the-clock Metro and bus services would actually help those get home safe at odd hours. Quoting the examples of cities such as Chennai and Mumbai, Raj said if Brand Bengaluru needed to survive, it must keep pace with its peers.
BMTC chief V Ponnuraj also felt that creating separate bus lanes would help reduce congestion on the roads.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
