The divorce rates are reportedly soaring high in developed countries like the United States of America, France etc, but remain under 1 per cent in India. Developed countries face higher rates of divorce than developing countries, as reported by India Today.
The most common reasons for failed marriages reportedly are:
- Infidelity
- Incompatibility
- Physical/mental abuse
- Drug/alcohol addiction
Fact: The global divorce rate has increased upto 251.8 per cent since 1960. Every year, world organisations such as the UN record global divorce rates.
Countries with the lowest divorce rate:
India: 1 per cent- Due to societal pressure and the taboo of being divorced, India has the lowest rate of divorce. Only 13 out of 1000 marriages end up in a divorce.
Chile: 3 per cent- Divorce, in Chile, is also seen as a taboo; Hence, the divorce rate stands at the second position from the bottom.
Countries with the highest divorce rate:
Luxembourg: 87 per cent- Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in Europe and has one of the fastest population growth in Europe. The divorce rate in Luxembourg is the highest in the world.
Spain: 65 per cent- Despite their popular belief in Catholicism, Spain has the second highest divorce rate in the world.
Note: A separate study corroborates the India Today report.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
