US President Donald Trump threatened on Friday (December 28) to close the US southern border with Mexico completely and halt aid to Central American countries if Democratic Party members continue to stonewall his demands for money to build a border wall, The Guardian has reported.
“We will be forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall & also change the ridiculous immigration laws that our country is saddled with. Hard to believe there was a Congress & President who would approve” Trump wrote on Twitter.
“The United States looses [sic] soooo much money on Trade with Mexico under NAFTA, over 75 Billion Dollars a year (not including Drug Money which would be many times that amount), that I would consider closing the Southern Border a ‘profit making operation,” Trump said. “Either we build (finish) the Wall or we close the Border.”
About 800,000 workers have either been placed on leave or required to work without pay as federal government partially shut down on Saturday after funding ran out for several departments, including transportation, housing and urban development, state, interior, agriculture, treasury, commerce, homeland security, and justice.
A bitter stalemate has continued between Democrats and Republicans over the $5 billion Trump is requesting for funding border-wall construction, a proposal Democrats oppose and have refused to yield on. Democrats have maintained that they will not approve funding for border-security at anything more than $1.6 billion.
Trump also indicated his plans to cut aid to several Central American countries over the caravans of migrants that have formed there and made their way to the US-Mexico border.
“Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador are doing nothing for the United States but taking our money. Word is that a new Caravan is forming in Honduras and they are doing nothing about it. We will be cutting off all aid to these 3 countries – taking advantage of US for years!” Trump continued in another tweet.
During his successful presidential 2016 campaign, Trump promised that he would turn the fencing on the US southern border into a wall. He also claimed that he would force the Mexican government to pay for it.
