A furor of controversy has been generated due to Jharkhand assembly’s decision to allocate a special room within the premises of the assembly for MLAs to offer namaz.
A PIL has already been filed against the decision by petitioner Bhairav Singh in Jharkhand High Court, on the premises that the assembly is a public building and hence allocating a special room for namaz would be against the principle of secularism enshrined in the Indian constitution.
Many of the BJP MLAs came dressed in the attire of Hindu priests to protest this decision of speaker Rabindranath Mahto to allocate a special room for namaz.
They also demanded that the assembly lunch break be called thirty minutes earlier so that the MLAs could ago and pray to Lord Hanuman.
An MLA in Bihar state, named Hari Bhushan Thakur Bachol, has demanded a special room to be allocate to Hindu MLAs so that they can recite verses from Bhagavad Gita, and chant the Hanuman Chalisa.
An MLA of the Samajwadi Party has demanded a room to offer Nawaz in the UP Vidhan Sabha, Times of India reports.
The PIL filed against this decision of the Jharkhand assembly mentions that allocating a room specifically for members of a particular religious community would have a damaging effect on the intricate social fabric of society.
