Actor Prakash Rai, known for his villainous roles in movies, has decided to give a tough fight to all parties ahead of the upcoming general elections in 2019. He tweeted his decision to contest as an independent candidate and that the details of the constituency will be announced soon. He has been active in political matters, especially after the murder of his friend and journalist Gauri Lankesh, in 2017.

In 2017, he had announced that he was open to the idea of entering politics, if need be. He has been attacking the BJP quite often and has criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and MP Anantkumar Hegde.
He went on to file a defamation case against Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha, alleging that he made remarks that can be termed as derogatory.
Deccan Herald quoted him as saying, “I have set off on a journey to discover and learn something which remains unknown. In a way, the journey is a process of getting naked. It's not the process of learning, but the process of forgetting whatever I've learned, that makes me happy.”
