British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called on European leaders to fortify their borders and provide unwavering support to Ukraine as he outlined key elements of his strategy to end Russia’s war, reported The New Indian Express.
“Every nation must contribute to that in the best way that it can, bringing different capabilities and support to the table, but all taking responsibility to act, all stepping up their own share of the burden," Starmer stated on Sunday (2 March), addressing 18 European leaders, quoted as saying by TNIE.
Starmer’s push for European self-reliance follows US President Donald Trump’s recent sharp criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, raising concerns about continued American support for Kyiv.
In response, Starmer sought to bridge European-US ties while preserving the emerging peace framework disrupted by Friday’s Oval Office dispute.
Outlining a coordinated European approach, Starmer revealed that he had collaborated with France and Ukraine to draft a multi-faceted peace plan. The proposal is built on four key pillars:
Sustained Aid to Ukraine – Ensuring continuous financial and military assistance to strengthen Ukraine’s position.
Economic Pressure on Russia – Maintaining sanctions to weaken Moscow’s leverage in negotiations.
Arming Ukraine for Deterrence – Providing military resources to prevent future Russian aggression.
Forming a Defensive Coalition – Establishing a “coalition of the willing” to safeguard any peace deal.
Starmer acknowledged that securing US backing remains critical for the plan’s success. “If there is to be a deal, if there is to be a stopping of the fighting, then that agreement has to be defended,” he said, warning against a temporary truce that could allow Russia to regroup.
Despite expressing distrust toward Russian President Vladimir Putin, Starmer reaffirmed his confidence in working with Trump, emphasising the importance of transatlantic unity in achieving lasting peace.
As part of its commitment, the UK pledged £1.6 billion ($2 billion) in export financing to supply Ukraine with 5,000 air defense missiles. Starmer framed this as a “once-in-a-generation moment” for Europe, urging nations to rise to the occasion.
