Two people were detained by Manipur police on Saturday (20 September) in connection with the ambush on an Assam Rifles convoy that killed two personnel and injured five others.
They also recovered a van suspected to have been used in the attack at Nambol Sabal Leikai on Friday evening (19 September), reported India Today.
Two Assam Rifles jawans, Nb Sub Shyam Gurung (58) and Rifleman GD Kashav (29), died, and five others were injured when armed terrorists ambushed a Tata 407 vehicle.
“... Security forces carried out a massive operation in Shantipur and Ishok areas... Two persons were detained for further verification,” Manipur Police said in a statement.
Police found the silver-blue van at Mutum Yangbi in Imphal West, about 10 km from the ambush site.
“As per preliminary investigation, multiple owners of the said vehicle have been identified, and efforts are still on to uncover more details,” the statement added.
A day after the attack, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla chaired a high-level security review at Raj Bhavan, Imphal, focusing on the 19 September ambush in Bishnupur district.
Officials resolved to strengthen coordination among security agencies to swiftly identify perpetrators and prevent similar incidents, considering enhanced patrolling, intensified intelligence gathering, and tightened security in vulnerable areas, highways, and border zones.
Following the meeting, the Governor visited IGAR (South) Headquarters at Mantripukhri, paid homage to the martyrs, laid a wreath, and a general salute was accorded in their honour.
The Manipur government condemned the ambush and announced ex-gratia payments of Rs 5 lakh for each deceased jawan and Rs 2 lakh for the injured.
Additional support will aid treatment and rehabilitation.
The government reaffirmed that “such heinous acts of violence will not be tolerated, and every effort will be made to restore peace and stability in the state.”
