Senior government officials on Saturday (11 October) reviewed the progress of the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport coming up at Bhogapuram in Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram district, where nearly 90 per cent of construction work has been completed, as per a Times of India report.

The airport, which is being developed by the GMR Group, is now expected to be ready well ahead of its scheduled completion date of June next year.

A high-level team comprising Industrial and Infrastructure Special Chief Secretary MT Krishna Babu, AP Airports Development Corporation Managing Director Praveen Aditya, Vizianagaram District Collector Ram Sundara Reddy, Joint Collector Sethu Madhavan, and senior representatives from GMR Group carried out an on-site inspection to assess the project’s progress.

Officials reviewed the development of key infrastructure, including the trumpet interchange, terminal building, approach road, and runways. The airport is being constructed over 2,203 acres, with an additional 500 acres earmarked for future expansion.

Two 3.8 km long runways have already been completed, while the second phase of development is planned for 2030.

The state government plans to widen 15 internal roads linking Visakhapatnam and neighbouring areas to the airport at an estimated cost of Rs 390 crore.

In addition, four elevated corridors have been proposed from Aganampudi–Lankelapalem to Kommadi to ensure seamless access.

During the visit, Special Chief Secretary Krishna Babu reviewed pending land acquisition and legal issues, while Collector Ram Sundara Reddy said the team discussed timelines for completing the remaining work, ensuring water and power supply, and improving road connectivity between Visakhapatnam and Bhogapuram.

The inspection tour also included a detailed assessment of the terminal, control tower, and airstrip.
