Big Win For Karnataka: Energy Conservation Target Achieved Years Ahead Of Schedule, Over 800 Million Units Saved

Karnataka has exceeded its Energy Conservation and Energy Efficiency target well ahead of schedule, achieving over 800 million kWh units and surpassing the original target of 744 million kWh set for 2022-2027, reported The Hindu.

At a stakeholder workshop on 10 March, Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited's (KREDL) Managing Director K P Rudrappaiah announced the milestone, crediting it to sector-wise energy efficiency goals. 

He emphasised that KREDL, the nodal agency for implementing the state’s Energy Conservation and Energy Efficiency Policy, remains committed to further advancements in consultation with industry leaders and government departments.

Karnataka had formulated an Energy Efficiency Action Plan in January 2024 in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII).

This plan outlines a strategic roadmap for improving energy efficiency across various sectors.

Further, Karnataka has made significant strides in renewable energy generation, solidifying its position as a leader in clean energy adoption.

For example, Pavagada Solar Park is one of the world’s largest solar parks, generating 4.5 billion units of energy annually and reducing CO2 emissions by 3.6 million tonnes per year.

Another key project is the Sharavathi Renewable Energy Project, set to become India’s largest pumped storage power generation unit, with a planned capacity of 2,000 MW, leveraging the Sharavathi River’s hydroelectric potential.
