The Kochuveli Railway Station will see a major infrastructure upgrade with the installation of two additional platforms and a new train stabling line.
It also known as Thiruvananthapuram North Railway Station. It was built to alleviate traffic congestion at Thiruvananthapuram Central.
The Thiruvananthapuram division of Southern Railways estimates that the infrastructure development will cost Rs 39.57 crore.
The final stage of construction will take place from 1 to 11 December.
One of the main projects slated as part of the upgrade include a new signal and telecommunication facility and an optical fibre cable (OFC) hut.
According to a press release from the railways on Tuesday (29 November), extension of two existing platforms (platform 2 and 3) by 53 m, additional shelters for platforms two and three (32 m) and platforms four and five (64 m) are the major works scheduled as part of the upgrade, reports The Hindu.
When the construction is completed, there will be six platforms and four stabling lines available for train operations at Kochuveli.
As part of the upgrade, the railways will switch from relay interlocking to electronic interlocking (EI) equipment. EI is a computerised software programme used to manage interlocking between signals and locations.
The EI is being implemented for the first time in this region and offers improved safety and less maintenance.

The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
