A day after announcing a 'US-brokered ceasefire' between India and Pakistan, US President Donald Trump on Sunday (11 May) stated that he looks forward to working with both nations to find a resolution to the Kashmir issue “after a thousand years.”
However, India had earlier said that there is no ceasefire agreement but only a mutual understanding to reduce military tensions.
Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump said, "I will work with you both to see if, after a “thousand years,” a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir. God Bless the leadership of India and Pakistan on a job well done!!!".
Trump expressed his gratitude to the leaders of both countries, calling it a wise decision "to stop the current aggression that could have led to the death and destruction of so many, and so much."
"I am very proud of the strong and unwaveringly powerful leadership of India and Pakistan for having the strength, wisdom, and fortitude to fully know and understand that it was time to stop the current aggression that could have lead to the death and destruction of so many, and so much. Millions of good and innocent people could have died!," he added.
He expressed hope that the ceasefire, allegedly facilitated by the US, would bring long-term prosperity to both India and Pakistan.
"Your legacy is greatly enhanced by your brave actions. I am proud that the USA was able to help you arrive at this historic and heroic decision. While not even discussed, I am going to increase trade, substantially, with both of these great Nations," he added.
Trump’s surprise Saturday announcement declared a “full and immediate ceasefire” between India and Pakistan, crediting US intervention for ending four days of escalating military tensions between the two nuclear powers.
Following Trump’s announcement on Saturday, India said that the Pakistani Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) had called his Indian counterpart and It was agreed between them that both sides would cease all firing and military action on land, in the air, and at sea with immediate effect.
However, the fragile peace lasted only a few hours before Pakistan violated the mutal understanding as heavy shelling was reported from Pakistani side and multiple drone sightings were reported from the Akhnoor, Rajouri, and RS Pura sectors along the International Border, with India downing four drones in the region.
