Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that the Mumbai Metro 3 stretch from Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Worli will become operational within the next 100 days.

Shinde, who also oversees the urban development (UD) portfolio, made the announcement following a review meeting of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), UD, and Housing departments led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

CM Fadnavis directed officials to draft a new schedule for completing all metro projects in the MMRDA area, emphasising the importance of avoiding delays.

“Plan for 50 km of metro to be started every year from next year. At least 23 km of metro will be started this year. Also, Metro-3 will add 20 to 25 km to it,” he said.

The 10-station Aqua Line stretch, spanning from BKC to Aarey, includes nine underground stations and was constructed at a cost of Rs 14,120 crore.

Once fully operational, the entire 33.5-km Metro Line 3 corridor, running from Navy Nagar in south Mumbai to Aarey Depot in the north centre, is expected to ease traffic congestion and serve 1.3 million riders daily.

The project will connect Mumbai’s city centre to the suburbs and integrate with other transport systems, including metro lines, monorail, suburban rail, inter-city rail, and Mumbai International Airport.

Shinde also highlighted the review of MMRDA’s pod taxi project, which aims to provide relief to commuters in BKC and support the decongestion of the Eastern Express Highway. Additionally, the Thane-Borivli tunnel project was discussed.

CM Fadnavis instructed officials to explore global examples of metros operating without car sheds and develop temporary alternatives. He also emphasised reserving space for future metro car sheds to avoid delays in upcoming projects.

Speaking at a business conclave in Thane later that day, Shinde reiterated the state government’s commitment to transforming Mumbai into a fintech powerhouse in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision.
