Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (22 June) spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and expressed concern over recent escalation in the Israel-Iran conflict.
This comes after the United States expanded its involvement in the conflict today, targeting three major Iranian nuclear facilities — Natanz, Isfahan, and the fortified Fordo complex — all part of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
Expresssing deep concerns at the escalation of the conflict in West Asia, PM Modi called for immediate de-escalation and early restoration of peace.
"Spoke with President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian. We discussed in detail about the current situation. Expressed deep concern at the recent escalations. Reiterated our call for immediate de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward and for early restoration of regional peace, security and stability," PM Modi said in a post on X.
This morning, US B-2 stealth bombers targeted the underground Fordo facility in Iran using bunker-buster bombs, while Natanz and Isfahan facilitiees were hit by Tomahawk cruise missiles.
US reportedly used six "bunker buster" bombs to destroy the Iranian nuclear site at Fordow early Sunday (21 June).
In addition, 30 tomahawk missiles, launched from US submarines, were used to strike the Natanz and Isfahan facilities.
The strikes, aimed at crippling Iran’s nuclear capabilities, reportedly used GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators and Tomahawk cruise missiles.
Constructed covertly beneath a mountain near Qom in breach of UN resolutions, the Fordow facility was publicly disclosed in 2009.
Initially described as an “emergency” facility built underground to withstand aerial attacks, Iran subsequently acknowledged Fordo as a uranium enrichment plant capable of housing about 3,000 centrifuges, NDTV reported.
