Delhi Police on Monday (28 July) refuted the allegations of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that Bengali-speakers are being harassed in the capital city, NDTV reported.

Labelling a video shared by Banerjee as "fabricated" and "politically motivated," Delhi's Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), Abhishek Dhania, clarified the story behind the video.

The video, which was circulated on social media, alleged that a woman and her child, who speak Bengali, were severely beaten by members of the Delhi Police force in the nation's capital because they were speaking their native language.

The police promptly acknowledged the video posted on social media platform X by Banerjee and said, "Upon inquiry, we identified the woman as Sanjanu Parveen. During questioning, she alleged that on the night of 26 July, four men in plain clothes posing as police personnel took her and her child to a secluded spot and demanded Rs 25,000, which she claimed to have paid."

Nonetheless, the DCP stated that a comprehensive inquiry, encompassing scrutiny of CCTV footage and local intelligence, uncovered discrepancies in her narrative.

"During sustained questioning, the woman admitted that her relative, a political worker from Malda district in West Bengal, had asked her to make the video. The video was then circulated locally in Bengal and later surfaced on social media," the DCP said.

DCP Dhania dismissed the video as "baseless and fabricated," asserting that it was intentionally produced to tarnish the reputation of the Delhi Police.

"This appears to be a deliberate attempt to malign the image of Delhi Police through a politically motivated narrative. The matter is still under investigation," he said.
