Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh urged Australian firms to intensify collaboration in military technology and co-development of defence platforms with India, emphasising the strategic importance of a secure Indo-Pacific, reported Economic Times.

Speaking at the India-Australia Defence Industry Business Roundtable in Sydney, Singh invited Australian business leaders to “collaborate and innovate” with India to develop advanced systems and cutting-edge technologies, positioning both nations as enablers of regional peace and security.

Singh highlighted opportunities for Australian companies to co-develop and co-produce high-end systems, including propulsion technologies, autonomous underwater vehicles, flight simulators, and advanced materials.

“Under the banner of our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, established in 2020, we stand at a pivotal juncture to re-position our defence relations, not merely as partners, but as co-creators of a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific,” he said.

He welcomed Australia’s proposal for a reciprocal defence articles and services agreement.

“We welcome this initiative. Importantly, Australia has identified India as a top tier partner, removing certain regulatory barriers to enable easier technology sharing. This is a testament to the trust and confidence that bind us,” Singh added.

The minister outlined potential areas for collaboration, including co-production of naval vessels, ship refits, maintenance support, joint R&D in autonomous systems, and green shipbuilding technologies.

By diversifying supply chains and investing in innovation, he said, the two countries can enhance regional resilience and self-reliance.

Singh underscored that Indian shipyards can provide mid-life upgrades and maintenance for the Royal Australian Navy and vessels under Australia’s Pacific Maritime Security Programme.

“Together, we can develop cutting-edge technologies, build advanced platforms, and ensure that our industries are not just suppliers, but strategic enablers of peace and security in the region,” he emphasised.

He urged the Australian business community to invest, collaborate, and innovate to forge a partnership that delivers economic and strategic benefits, leveraging India’s manufacturing capabilities, policy support, and vibrant innovation ecosystem.
