The Ministry of Rural Development has set an ambitious target of sanctioning 10 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) in January 2025, as part of its goals for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
In an official statement on Wednesday (1 January), the ministry announced plans to set monthly targets to ensure timely implementation of rural development schemes, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of creating a poverty-free India.
"Poverty-free villages is Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pledge. Today, on the first day of the new year, we have set some targets," said Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in a post on X.
He added, "The schemes of the Rural Development Ministry are bringing a change in the lives of people. The effort is to ensure that all the beneficiaries get the benefits of these schemes in an effective and transparent manner as soon as possible."
The ministry emphasised the importance of timely execution of government schemes to achieve its vision of poverty-free villages.
It revealed that the first instalment for the sanctioned houses would also be released to beneficiaries in January.
Chouhan highlighted that future ministry targets would be set monthly, with consistent efforts to meet them.
He urged officials to focus on achieving objectives for schemes such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, PM-Awas, National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), and DAY-NRLM.
The PMAY-G programme, extended for five years in August 2024, aims to build two crore additional houses by 2029. The scheme's eligibility rules have been revised to include more families and advance the goal of housing for all.
The statement noted that the financial year 2024-25 has seen the highest budget allocation for the housing scheme, amounting to Rs 54,500 crore.
However, as of December 2024, only 31.65 lakh houses had been sanctioned against the annual target of 42 lakh, with 4.19 lakh houses, including 71,000 under the PM Janman programme, completed from June to December.
