In a major step towards modernising urban transport and easing congestion in Sikkim’s capital, Chief Minister Shri P.S. Tamang (Golay) chaired a high-level meeting last week to review the state’s preparedness for the much-anticipated ropeway project.

Senior officials from the Urban Development Department (UDD), key stakeholders, and potential investors were present to discuss the project’s implementation under the Sikkim Ropeway Act, 2023.

The ropeway system, envisioned as a transformative leap in Gangtok’s urban mobility, is designed to reduce traffic congestion, provide a sustainable transport alternative, and boost tourism appeal.

Gangtok has long struggled with traffic bottlenecks due to the rise in private vehicle ownership, linear road structures, and narrow carriageways, leading to increased travel time and a strain on existing infrastructure.

The proposed ropeway, with its scenic aerial route, promises not only to ease commuting woes but also to enhance the city’s visual appeal and connectivity.

Beyond traffic solutions, the cable car system is expected to spur local employment, creating opportunities in construction, maintenance, and tourism sectors.

Addressing the meeting, the UDD presented a detailed feasibility report, highlighting the technical, financial, and operational aspects of the project.

The discussion also centred on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, ensuring a revenue-sharing framework and annual fixed financing to facilitate smooth execution.

A pivotal outcome of the meeting was the decision to proceed with the Detailed Project Report (DPR). In a symbolic tribute to Sikkim’s 50th year of statehood, the ropeway project has been renamed the Golden Jubilee Cable Car, reinforcing its significance as a landmark development.
