An official from the Donald Trump-led US administration faced an assault during the ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session on Thursday afternoon (25 September).

According to Fox News, the incident occurred when a “deranged leftist” followed the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) official into a bathroom at the UN, recorded him, and then physically attacked him.

The official was in New York with HHS Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, reported Hindustan Times.

"An HHS official was followed into a bathroom, recorded, physically assaulted and verbally accosted by a deranged leftist at the UN who somehow entered the venue past multiple layers of security," White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly was quoted as saying by Fox News.

Authorities arrested the assailant shortly after the incident, while the official escaped unharmed.

The White House criticised the UN for what it called a major security lapse and accused the world body of contributing to “sabotage” against Trump during his visit.

Earlier, Trump alleged that a series of mishaps at the UN disrupted his appearance.

He said the Secret Service was investigating an escalator malfunction, a teleprompter blackout, and a sound system failure.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that the escalator carrying him and Melania Trump “came to a screeching halt” and nearly caused him to fall.

He further claimed, "Not one, not two, but three very sinister events!"

Calling it “triple sabotage,” Trump said, “This wasn't a coincidence, this was triple sabotage at the UN. They ought to be ashamed of themselves … No wonder the United Nations hasn't been able to do the job that they were put in existence to do.”
