Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Tuesday (10 June) issued a stark warning of a "nuclear holocaust" in a social media video, criticising "warmongers" for bringing the world "closer to the brink of nuclear annihilation than ever before," reported Politico.
In the three-minute video, Gabbard recounted her recent visit to Hiroshima, Japan, to understand the aftermath of the 1945 US nuclear attack.
The video includes footage from her trip and historical archives depicting victims, with Gabbard directly addressing the camera about the consequences of a nuclear attack.
Gabbard emphasised that modern nuclear weapons are far more powerful than the 1945 bomb, stating, "a single nuclear weapon today could kill millions in just minutes."
She continued, "This is the reality of what’s at stake, what we are facing now. Because as we stand here today, closer to the brink of nuclear annihilation than ever before, political elite warmongers are carelessly fomenting fear and tensions between nuclear powers."
Gabbard suggested that powerful individuals believe they would escape harm in "nuclear shelters."
She urged, "It’s up to us, the people, to speak up and demand an end to this madness. We must reject this path to nuclear war and work toward a world where no one has to live in fear of a nuclear holocaust."
The date of the video's production is unclear, although Gabbard visited a US military installation in Japan last week with US Ambassador to Japan George Glass.
Gabbard did not visit Hiroshima during her first trip to Japan as DNI in March.
These comments coincide with ongoing Trump administration negotiations with Iran regarding a nuclear deal.
On Monday (9 June), Trump informed reporters that Iran rejected a US proposal to halt uranium enrichment.
Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman and presidential candidate, has consistently criticised war hawks and warned of nuclear conflict.
Before endorsing Donald Trump and switching parties, she stated during her 2019 presidential campaign launch that the world was "on the precipice of nuclear war" and advocated for strengthening nuclear treaties.
In a 2023 X post, she wrote, "The warmongers are trying to drag us into WW3, which can only end in one way: nuclear annihilation and the suffering and death of all our loved ones. Zelensky, Biden, NATO, congressional and media neocons are insane. And we are insane if we passively allow them to lead us into this holocaust like sheep to the slaughter."
