The central government has issued a tender for the construction of buildings and site development for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai.
The final date for submission of applications is 18 September. While the expected period of completion is 33 months, the Defects Liability Period (DLP) is 24 months.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is funding the project.
The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has repeatedly said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government had failed to fulfil its promise.
In February this year, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya asked the DMK not to politicise the issue in his reply to a question by senior DMK MP TR Baalu.
He had said that it was wrong on the part of DMK to say that AIIMS Madurai had not started because while the infrastructure for the hospital facility was yet to come up, educational programmes had started.
The reasons Mandaviya mentioned for the delay were the failure of the state government to allot land on time and the inability of JICA officials to visit the site due to the coronavirus pandemic.
