Dear Reader,

The self-appointed guardians of culture and morality went berserk when Bhojpuri artist Pawan Singh was given a ticket to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Asansol, Bengal.

They decried his content in Bhojpuri for being obscene and misogynistic. Post the outrage, Pawan Singh himself bowed out of the contest.

This brief saga begs a larger question - is there classism even in vulgarity wherein 'obscenity and misogyny is entertainment' when served in the language of the affluent and 'immoral' when in the language of the modest masses?

Sumedha Verma Ojha dissects this appalling hypocrisy of classist gatekeepers around Pawan Singh and Bhojpuri.

Until next time!
