We're looking to hire people for the following roles. Details required for applying are given at the end of this document.
1. Staff Writer-Politics (Western India)
You will be expected to cover the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa primarily.
Produce reports, news items, analyses on the politics of western India and also on the most important non-political stories from the region.
We are looking for applicants who are extremely well-read, and are always curious and argumentative. They should be waking up every morning with a mild sense of panic over having missed the last six hours of the news cycle. Degree in journalism is not necessary.
Applicant should display a good understanding of western India's politics, culture, society and history of the region post-independence.
Applicant should be able to track the most important stories from the region and produce news items on both immediate developments and long term trends.
Should be familiar with digital publishing tools and social media tools.
2. Staff Writer-Politics (Southern India)
You will be expected to cover the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala primarily.
Produce reports, news items, analyses on the politics of the two states and also on the most important non-political stories from them.
We are looking for applicants who are extremely well-read, and are always curious and argumentative. They should be waking up every morning with a mild sense of panic over having missed the last six hours of the news cycle. Degree in journalism is not necessary.
Applicant should display a good understanding of southern India's politics, especially of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and also of their culture, society and history post-independence.
Applicant should be able to track the most important stories from the region and produce news items on both immediate developments and long term trends.
Should be familiar with digital publishing tools and social media tools.
3. Staff Writer-Business and Economics
You will be expected to produce reports, news items, analyses on stories from the corporate and finance world and also produce stories linking microeconomic developments to macro trends. A degree in economics is preferred.
Applicant should be able to track the most important stories from the sectors and produce news items on both immediate developments and long term trends.
Applicants should be able to defend their opinions on economic issues strongly. We are looking for applicants who are extremely well-read and who track the latest updates from economic, business and finance worlds with excitement.
Should be familiar with digital publishing tools and social media tools.
4. Staff Writer-Agriculture and Trade
You will be expected to cover the agriculture and trade sectors.
Produce reports, news items, analyses on the important developments from the two sectors.
Applicant should be able to track the most important stories related to agriculture and trade and produce news items on both immediate developments and long term trends. We are looking for applicants who are extremely well-read, and are always curious and argumentative about issues related to India's agriculture and India's trade and trading policies.
Should be familiar with digital publishing tools and social media tools.
5. Copy editor
You will be the final person in the process of screening and editing an article. How the Swarajya site and its articles look will be disproportionately dependent on you.
Candidates should be obsessed with grammar. They should also display an ability to simplify a complex sentence into a simpler one, without dumbing down the information in it.
Active voice over passive voice.
A copy editor is also expected to identify and delete any factual howlers that may have crept into a copy. So a general sense and knowledge of the fundamentals of politics, economics, culture is necessary.
