In the lap of the Mallaprabha river reigned the glorious Badami Chalukyas whose testimony in time in the form of temples that they built in Badami, Pattadakal and Aihole gets the region the tag of being the “cradle of Indian temple architecture”.
A unique style they had which blended that of the north and south and which came to be called the Karnata Dravida style. While Aihole was the capital of the early Chalukyas, Pulakeshin II, the most illustrious ruler during whose reign the kingdom expanded to the whole of the Deccan, made Badami, then known as Vatapi, his capital. He also took on the Pallavas of the south, who he finally lost to bringing the grand Badami Chalukya chapter in history to an end.
