Swarajya’s cover story for its April print edition delves into the global giant that is China.

Dear Reader,

The liberal order that governed our socio-economic policies and political institutions is at risk today. Engulfed by the surge of nationalistic forces across the globe, world leaders are now turning to protectionism. From Trump’s ascent to the Oval Office to Britain’s exit, the last three years have witnessed the decline of global leadership in the West.

This is the age of China.

Unshackling itself from the communist policies of Mao, the last decade has seen China transform itself into a controlled democracy with an autocratic leadership.

Tariff wars with the United States, accusations of political interference from Australia, continuous defiance of nuclear sanctions by North Korea, and a reluctant alliance with South Korea and Japan have kept the Chinese in the fray. However, the fire of the dragon rages beyond its political limitations and geographical capacity.

Today, China is the leading investor in renewable energy, pumping money to create batteries, cells, and other technology enhancements that it can export across the world. Aided by its cheap labour, manufacturing in China is helping countries make an intelligent shift towards clean energy. As the biggest trade partner for some nations, it has managed to string together alliances for its ambitious ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative.

How did China get here? What have they done in the last few years to surpass the United States, the European Union, and India to emerge as the global superpower?

In our April edition of Swarajya, we dig into China’s understanding of the world, what that holds for the future, and what the country really wants. The answers to these questions are not absolute, for quite like its size, the aspirations and ambitions of the Chinese are distinguished by perspectives.
