Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, and state-owned SJVN Limited have inked a pact to establish a 460 MW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) project.

The plant, designed to meet the 460 MW FDRE requirement will integrate solar, wind, and battery storage technologies to ensure efficient energy dispatch during peak hours, thereby stabilising the grid, TPREL said in a statement.

The plant is expected to generate nearly 3,000 million units (MUs) of power and offset 2,200 million kgs of CO2 emissions annually, it added.

As implied by its name, FDRE delivers consistent round-the-clock power from green sources to consumers, assisting power distribution companies (Discoms) in fulfilling their renewable purchase obligations and energy storage obligations.

In response to the challenges stemming from the widespread adoption of variable and intermittent renewable energy (RE), FDRE technology converts such fluctuating RE into reliable and dispatchable energy through integration with energy storage systems (ESSs).

This is achieved by storing surplus energy generated during peak periods and releasing it during periods of high demand or when RE sources are less productive, such as when the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing.

TPREL had previously secured its first FDRE project tender in November 2023, when it received a letter of award for developing a 200 MW FDRE project with hydropower generator SJVN. The tender includes a greenshoe option for additional capacity beyond the initial 200 MW.

With the latest win, the total renewables capacity of TPREL has reached 9,421 MW (PPA capacity is 7,978 MW) including 4,906 MW projects under various stages of implementation.

The company's operational capacity currently stands at 4,515 MW, comprising 3,485 MW solar and 1,030 MW wind power.
