Bengaluru’s bus priority lane is making a comeback. The once-successful system between Silk Board and KR Puram is set to return under the Rs 400 crore B-SMILE (Bengaluru Sustainable Mobility and Integrated Lifestyle Enhancement) project, launched by the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) to create an integrated, people-first transport network across the city’s IT corridor.
Confirming the development, RK Mishra, Independent Director at B-SMILE, told Times of India in a report that the project aims to blend various modes of public and non-motorised transport to offer commuters seamless connectivity.
The plan also focuses on improving pedestrian and cycling facilities to encourage citizens to shift away from private vehicles.
Explaining the project’s broader purpose, Mishra said the goal is to make Bengaluru’s transport ecosystem “more inclusive and people-centric.”
“You would be able to have access to very wide paths where you can walk. And, if you are living within a few kilometres of the facility, you can cycle, walk to office, take the bus to the office or take the Metro to the office. This will be integrated mobility,” Mishra was quoted as saying in the TOI report.
BS Prahalad, Technical Director of B-SMILE, noted that the ORR model will give equal importance to all transport modes, from pedestrian walkways and cycle tracks to buses and the Metro.
“The bus priority lane will be reintroduced in a way where it is non-intrusive while still giving the fastest route to the bus,” he said.
Originally launched in 2019, the bus priority lane had eased commute times but was later discontinued due to Metro construction and the pandemic. Now, under the B-SMILE framework, it will return with improved design, digital monitoring, and public engagement.
The redesigned ORR will feature dedicated bus lanes, three carriageways for mixed traffic, bi-directional cycle tracks, and wide footpaths with shelters and safe boarding zones, a major step toward making Bengaluru’s roads safer, smarter, and more sustainable.
