Hisahiro Nishimoto, group vice-president of industry and mobility area (IMBA) at Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Japan, and Tomohiro Yoshida, director and factory automation division head at Mitsubishi Electric India, inaugurated the company's new manufacturing plant in Talegaon, with an initial investment exceeding Rs 200 crore.

The facility, situated in Badhalawadi village near Maharastra's Talegaon, spans 40,000 square metres, with an initial built-up area of 15,400 square metres. Operations at the plant are scheduled to commence in January 2024.

The plant has already hired 100 employees, predominantly from the local community, with plans to expand the workforce to 500 in the future.

Speaking after the inauguration, Yoshida emphasised that the local manufacturing setup signifies a shift from importing factory automation products to domestic production, potentially leading to cost-efficiency and optimisation.

He highlighted the benefits of local manufacturing, including reduced transportation costs, import duties, and other associated expenses.

Additionally, Yoshida noted that local manufacturing could create job opportunities in the area.

Yoshida explained the choice of Talegaon, stating that the company already had a factory in Bhosari and was seeking larger spaces nearby.

After exploring various locations, Talegaon was deemed suitable for their investment and expansion plans.

Regarding future plans, Nishimoto mentioned the initial investment of around Rs 2.2 billion, with the intention to increase it as the facility expands.

The Talegaon plant will serve as the central hub for their factory automation manufacturing operations. Currently, the facility is manufacturing inverters (variable frequency drives) and plans to broaden its product range to include various industrial automation and control products.

Expressing appreciation for the Indian government's initiatives, Yoshida and Nishimoto acknowledged the significant push given to manufacturing in India, citing the Make-in-India programme as a key driver.

They emphasised the rising demand for automation products in India and positioned the new Pune facility as their commitment to accelerating the use of automation in manufacturing.

Nishimoto highlighted the strategic significance of the Indian market for Mitsubishi Electric Corporation within the global factory automation business perspective, citing India's growing industrial landscape and focus on technology adoption and automation.
