Commodore KS Subramanian, a revered figure in the Indian Navy, has passed away at the age of 94.
The Indian Navy has announced the demise of the veteran officer, who breathed his last on 5 June 2023, in Coimbatore.
Having been commissioned on 1 September 1951, Commodore Subramanian's career spanned over three decades and left an indelible mark on the Indian Navy.
One of his notable achievements was his command of the Indian Navy's first submarine, INS Kalvari (S23), a Foxtrot-class boat.
On 8 December 1967, INS Kalvari was commissioned at the Soviet naval base in Riga, Latvia. Accompanied by three naval officers from Chennai, this trailblazing team undertook the remarkable task of delivering India's commissioned submarine from St. Petersburg to Vizag in 79 days.
This significant milestone marked the birth of the Indian Navy's submarine arm, and Commodore Subramanian played a pivotal role in its establishment.
During his career, Commodore Subramanian held various positions, including Director of the Tactical School and Commanding Officer of INS Virbahu and INS Amba. He additionally served as the Captain of the 8th and 9th Submarine Squadrons of the Indian Navy.
CommodoreSubramanian also held the esteemed position of Chief of Staff of the Southern Naval Command before retiring from service in 1978.
