In a bid to further strengthen its logistics capabilities, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has received the first two of its six brand-new Dornier Do-228 aircraft.

This comes two days after the IAF inducted its first Airbus-manufactured C-295 tactical transport aircraft at Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad.

Manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), these upgraded Do-228 aircrafts feature new engines, composite propellers, advanced avionics, and a modern glass cockpit.

The Ministry of Defence finalised the procurement of six Dornier-228 aircraft for the IAF from HAL, in March 2023, at a budget of Rs 667 crore.

Originally used by the IAF for route transport and communication tasks, these aircraft have also played a crucial role in training transport pilots.

This new batch of six aircraft will be equipped with enhanced, fuel-efficient engines and five-bladed composite propellers.

Their versatility makes them well-suited for short-haul operations, capable of using semi-prepared or short runways, particularly in the northeastern and island regions of India.

The Dornier-228 aircraft is a multi-functional, lightweight transport aircraft, well-suited for a variety of purposes.

Designed to fulfill various needs, from utility and commuter transport to maritime surveillance, the Dornier-228 aircraft is a highly adaptable asset.

The addition of these six aircraft will significantly enhance the IAF's operational capability, especially in remote and challenging areas.
