The Indian Navy has successfully test-fired a Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM), achieving a significant milestone in the ongoing effort towards enhancing its anti-air warfare capability.

The test-firing of the missile was undertaken from INS Visakhapatnam, the lead ship of the Visakhapatnam-class stealth guided-missile destroyers.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation has jointly developed the missile in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industries. The missile is manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited.

The Indian Army and the Indian Air Force have also tested their own versions of the missile in recent years.

In September 2021, the first deliverable firing unit MRSAM was handed over to IAF in the presence of at the Air Force Station in Jaisalmer.

"The MRSAM system provides point and area air defence for ground assets against a wide range of threats including fighter aircraft, UAVs, helicopters, guided and unguided munitions, sub-sonic & supersonic cruise missiles etc. It is capable of engaging multiple targets at ranges up to 70 kms in severe saturation scenarios," the Defence Ministry said then.

"The missile is powered by indigenously developed rocket motor and control system for achieving high manoeuvrability during the terminal phase," the statement added.
