Could India And Japan Collaborate For Chip Development?
In the semiconductor sector, Japan and India will exchange information on technologies eligible for subsidies.
Japan and India are set to initiate a policy dialogue aimed at promoting collaboration in advanced fields such as semiconductors and hydrogen fuel, according to a report by Asia Nikkei.
Yasutoshi Nishimura, Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry, will visit India to meet with IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Power Minister Raj Kumar Singh.
The two countries are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding outlining the new framework, with a focus on facilitating partnerships between Japanese and Indian private sectors in advanced industries.
In the semiconductor sector, Japan and India will exchange information on technologies eligible for subsidies. Both countries will invest in their respective areas of strength, such as technology and materials development, as well as professional training, to establish an optimised supply chain.
India has been actively encouraging investment in its domestic semiconductor industry as a response to tensions between the US and China.
Infrastructure for water and power is crucial for developing a robust chip industry. The dialogue between Japan and India will pave the way for Japan to provide technological support and share information on India's business environment.
In the hydrogen sector, the two countries aim to reach an agreement on safety regulations for the transport of this next-generation fuel. India, known for its strong solar power sector, has incorporated green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy, into its national strategy.
However, India faces challenges such as the lack of hydrogen pipelines and stringent regulations. Japan plans to advocate for the relaxation of regulations in India.
This policy dialogue between Japan and India holds the potential for significant advancements in collaboration and cooperation, particularly in emerging and critical sectors such as semiconductors and hydrogen fuel.
