Gujarat has topped Niti Aayog's Export Preparedness Index 2021, followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka, in the second and third place respectively, according to the government think tank's report released on Friday.
The Export Preparedness Index assesses the readiness of the states, in terms of their export potential and performance.
Other states in the top five ranking include Tamil Nadu and Haryana, as per the report.
According to the NITI Aayog, the Export Preparedness Index is a data-driven endeavour to identify the fundamental areas critical for subnational export promotion.
"Gujarat has topped the index with a strong display in various sub-pillars such as Export promotion policy, Business Environment and Infrastructure," the report said.
"Other coastal states such as Maharashtra and Karnataka occupy the index’s second and third positions," it added.
"All three states have performed consistently across pillars, thus consolidating solid scores. These states are among the top states in the export contribution of more than 50 per cent in India in 2020-21," according to the report.
The EPI ranks states and UTs on 4 main pillars—Policy; Business Ecosystem; Export Ecosystem; Export Performance—and 11 sub-pillars—Export Promotion Policy; Institutional Framework; Business Environment; Infrastructure; Transport Connectivity; Access to Finance; Export Infrastructure; Trade Support; R&D Infrastructure; Export Diversification; and Growth Orientation.
The index was released by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Dr Rajiv Kumar, in the presence of NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant, Department of Commerce Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam, and other dignitaries.
