Construction of Gurugram Metro's first phase will commence with a ceremony on Friday (5 September), featuring Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Haryana Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini at the Bhoomi Poojan in Sector 44, the Hindustan Times reported.
The Rs 1,277 crore first phase includes construction of a 15.22 km metro rail viaduct, 15 stations, a 1.85 km spur to Dwarka Expressway, and a ramp to the proposed depot in Sector 33.
The project will connect with the Delhi Metro's Yellow line terminus.
"The bhoomi poojan will mark a historic day for the city. We plan to build the metro at a fast pace. The contractor has been asked to mobilise the site by the middle of this month," Chander Shekhar Khare, managing director of Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL), was quoted as saying by HT.
He added that geo-technical surveys for the second phase are already underway to expedite tender process.
A public meeting will be held at Gurugram University campus to connect citizens directly with the project.
The contract has been awarded to a joint venture, with construction equipment already arriving at the site.
A piling rig machine required for drilling foundations of metro pillars has reached Sector 44, marking the starting point where work will begin from the Yellow line's terminating point.
GMRL officials emphasised the urgent need for mass transport facilities in the rapidly growing city, with construction planned to proceed at an accelerated pace to address Gurugram's transportation challenges and provide residents with efficient connectivity to the Delhi Metro network.
