Amid NHAI’S Reluctance, Noida Explores Funding Models For 35 Km Elevated Road Along Yamuna, To Link Greater Noida
The road will help reduce congestion on the existing Noida-Greater Noida Expressway.
The Noida authority intends to construct a 35 km elevated road above the Yamuna embankment road using a build, operate, and transfer (BOT) model, following the National Highways Authority of India's (NHAI) reluctance to finance the project, as per a report from Hindustan Times.
Proposed in November 2023, the elevated road aims to enhance connectivity between Noida and Greater Noida, the twin industrial cities.
The road will not only alleviate congestion on the existing Noida-Greater Noida Expressway but also seamlessly connect the upcoming greenfield airport at Jewar with Noida.
According to authority officials, the NHAI can fund a project provided it owns the land.
The authority assured the NHAI that discussions are underway with the embankment road owner, the Uttar Pradesh irrigation department, to transfer the land to the NHAI for enabling the project construction.
As per the HT report, “If the NHAI will not take over this project and develop it, then we will explore other options. But first we are pursuing the NHAI as that will smoothen connectivity between Delhi and Noida airport. The other options that we have are building it from own funds or build it on a BOT basis after engaging a private player,” said Lokesh M, CEO, Noida authority.
Under the BOT model, a private agency will construct and operate the project to recover costs before returning it to the government.
However, officials are hesitant due to concerns about the feasibility of toll charges within city limits.
Previously, the authority considered building an elevated structure above the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway but opted for the current plan of constructing the elevated road along the Yamuna instead.
The proposed alignment will also connect with the Yamuna Expressway, so that commuters travelling between Delhi and Agra via Yamuna Expressway will also enjoy a smoother ride.
"This elevated road will start from Kalindi Kunj Barrage and end near Noida's Sector 150. Later, it will be extended towards Noida airport in Jewar and seamlessly connected with Greater Noida's Pari Chowk traffic intersection. Additionally, it will be linked to Delhi via the 5.5-km elevated road for smooth traffic flow," added Lokesh.
