Chandigarh EV Policy: Non-Electric Two-Wheeler Registrations To End In July, Four-Wheelers To Follow In December

Starting July, the Chandigarh administration will no longer register non-electric two-wheelers in line with its Electric Vehicle (EV) policy.
Non-electric cars will follow suit by December, as the limit for such vehicles in the current fiscal year is expected to be met by then, reports Indian Express.
The Union Territory (UT) had launched its EV policy in September 2022, which spans over five years. The policy aims to gradually discourage the registration of fuel-run vehicles to reduce pollution caused by vehicular traffic.
According to the current EV policy, the city can register up to 6,202 internal combustion engine (ICE) two-wheelers in the current financial year. Once the threshold is reached, only electric two-wheelers will be allowed further registration.
The administration has released data indicating that 4,032 ICE two-wheelers have been registered since 1 April of this year. Based on this information, only approximately 2,170 more can be registered in 2023-24, as this is expected to be over by July.
In contrast to the large number of ICE two-wheelers registered, only 257 electric two-wheelers have been registered in the city since April.
In the next financial year, no provision has been made for the registration of ICE two-wheelers. The focus will be on promoting electric vehicles to help reduce pollution levels in the state.
Additionally, once the number of ICE four-wheelers reaches 22,626, new registrations will not be permitted by UT. It is anticipated that this number will be reached in December.
To gradually reduce the usage of fuel-powered two-wheelers and three-wheelers, the administration previously decided to register 35 per cent of electric two-wheelers in 2022-23, 70 per cent in 2023-24, and 100 per cent from 2024-25 onwards, as per a Hindustan Times report.
The registering and licensing authority (RLA) official of Chandigarh, Pradhuman Singh, announced that after reaching the registration targets of non-electric vehicles, their registration, both permanent and temporary, will no longer be permitted in the city.
Further, UT adviser Dharam Pal said that the EV policy and the restriction on registering non-electric vehicles in the area will be reviewed.
