The Hyderabad Metro.
In a strategic move aimed at enhancing metro rail accessibility for the majority of commuters in the Telangana capital, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has officially greenlit the second phase of expansion of the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR).
The ambitious plan covers a substantial 70 kilometres, intricately connecting the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) from various corners of the city.
Currently operational on a stretch of 69 km across three corridors — Miyapur to L B Nagar (Red Line or Corridor 1), JBS station to MGBS (Green Line or Corridor 2), and Nagole to Raidurg (Blue Line or Corridor 3) — HMR is set to undergo significant growth in its next expansion phase.
According to The Hindu report, the existing metro rail network from Secunderabad's Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) to MGBS (Imlibun) will be extended up to Falaknuma, covering 5.5 km. Additionally, a further extension from Falaknuma to Chandrayangutta crossroads is planned, totalling 1.5 km.
As part of the expansion, the metro rail network will introduce four new corridors. The Nagole metro terminal station is slated for extension up to L B Nagar terminal metro station, connecting Chandrayangutta crossroads, Mailardevpally, P7 Road, and Shamshabad Airport, covering a substantial distance of 29 km.
Corridor 4 will be established, connecting Mailardevpally to the proposed High Court at Rajendranagar via Aramghar, spanning 4 km. Corridor 5 will traverse from Raidurg metro station to Biodiversity junction, Nanakramguda junction, Wipro junction, and the American Consulate (Financial District), spanning 8 km.
Continuing the expansion, Corridor 6 will extend from Miyapur terminal metro station to Patancheru via BHEL, covering a distance of 14 km. Corridor 7 will link L B Nagar metro station to Vanasthalipuram and Hayatnagar, spanning 8 km.
Under the directive of Chief Minister Reddy, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has already prepared a new route map, scrapping routes proposed by the previous government as impractical and costly. The primary objective of the revamped metro rail routes is to offer low-cost public transportation to a greater number of people.
The government aims to fulfil its commitment to providing metro rail services to the economically disadvantaged, focusing on the expansion of metro rail connectivity to all areas of the city.
