Hyderabad Regional Ring Road: Centre Gives Nod For Upgrading 182-Km Southern Stretch To National Highway

The union government has given the go-ahead for declaring 182-km southern stretch of the ambitious Regional Ring Road (RRR) project in Hyderabad, as a national highway.
The 340-km four-lane access-controlled RRR project, which encircles the Telangana state capital, is aimed at decongesting the traffic in the city and promoting urban satellite centres along the road.
Notably, the Ministry of Road Transport has already notified the 158-km northern section connecting key locations including Sangareddy, Narsapur, Toopran, Gajwel, Pragnapur, Jagdevpur, Bhongir and Choutuppal as NH 161 AA.
Telangana Chief Minister, A Revanth Reddy, met with Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari in Delhi on Tuesday, 20 February, to advocate for this decision.
Gadkari has also instructed the National Highway Authority of India officials to prepare the proposals to declare the southern section of RRR as the national highway. The Union Minister asked the Chief Minister to speed up the land acquisition and procedural processes related to the construction of the RRR.
Hyderabad, the capital city of Telangana consists of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, and is a bustling 400-year-old metropolis, with an urban population of 6 million people approximately. It already has a 158-km-long, eight-lane Outer Ring Road.
First conceptualised in 2001, the RRR project is expected to be a game-changer for Telangana, as it will cover 40 per cent of the population and link 20 towns with the national highways.
