Adani TotalEnergies Biomass Limited (ATBL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Total Gas Limited (ATGL), last week commissioned operations at phase 1 of its Barsana Biogas Plant, located in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura district.

The Barsana Biogas Project has three phases and would attain the overall capacity of 600 tonnes per day (TPD) of feedstock, generating over 42 TPD of compressed bio gas (CBG) and 217 TPD of organic fertiliser upon full commissioning. The total project cost for all three phases exceeds Rs 200 crore.

The plant uses napier grass as feedstock, which undergoes anaerobic digestion to produce CBG, solid and liquid fertilisers.

CBG — a biofuel — is produced from biomass sources like agriculture residue, cattle dung, sugarcane press mud, municipal solid waste, sewage treatment plant waste, etc.

The bio gas is purified to remove impurities such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, water vapour and compressed as CBG, which has more than 90 per cent methane content.

Further, CBG is exactly similar to the commercially available natural gas in its composition and energy potential. With similar calorific value and other properties similar to CNG, compressed bio gas can be used as an alternative, renewable automotive fuel.

Given the abundance of biomass in the country, CBG has the potential to replace CNG in automotive, industrial and commercial uses in the coming years.

Barsana is ATBL’s debut CBG production facility, signifying a major step in their commitment to a more environmentally friendly future. At 600 tonnes per day, this will also be the largest agri waste-based bio-CNG plant in the country.

Adani TotalEnergies plans to set up five CBG units across India, positioning them as a natural strategic investment towards supplementing ATGL city gas distribution and providing clean energy.
