The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to construct elevated roads on highways passing through cities.
Announced by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, in Pune, the elevated roads will include routes from Nashik Phata to Khed, Talegaon to Chakan, Hadapsar to Dive ghat and Wagholi to Shirur.
This development will be done with an estimated expenditure of Rs 30,000 crore, reported Hindustan Times.
Member of Parliament, Shirur Lok Sabha, Amol Kolhe, in his tweet, thanked Nitin Gadkari and NHAI officials for a positive response and consistent follow-up for projects under NHAI in Shirur constituency.
Further, he tweeted the estimated amounts for the projects — Rs 8,841 crore for Nashik Phata-Chandoli; Rs 10,000 crore for Pune-Shirur; Rs 11,000 crore for Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur.
These developments have come in as authorities have been urged, by commuters who face frequent traffic delays, to address the issue, particularly on stretches of roads that are regularly affected by traffic jams.
The construction of elevated highways is expected to reduce the traffic congestion.
The Union Minister also reviewed the various road works being carried out by NHAI, including the Palkhi Marga, within the limits of Pune district.
He conducted an aerial inspection of Palkhi route connecting important religious places from Alandi and Dehu to Pandharpur.
During the press conference, Nitin Gadkari announced development by NHAI for a new highway between Pune and Bangalore. Land acquisition work has already begun for the project.
He added, “The work of the Pune-Bengaluru highway is around 206 km. While travelling towards Bengaluru, the highway passes through villages suffering from drought. The stretch will bring about development that will give rise to new growth in the area.”
Furthermore, a separate detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared for the Katraj-Dehu road.
The Minister added, “During the construction of Katraj-Dehu Road, there was very little urbanisation and a bypass was constructed outside of the city. No one thought that Pune city will grow so fast, therefore the number of vehicles on this road has increased."
"A separate DPR is being prepared for ‘Katraj-Dehu Road’ following incidents of traffic jam and accident in the Navle Bridge area and Katraj-Dehu Road bypass. Hence, an elevated road is being considered in the Navale Pool area,” he added.
