The state of Maharashtra has proposed a Rs 2,195 crore Kharghar-Turbhe Link Road (KTLR) project to alleviate traffic on the Sion-Panvel highway.
A 1.763-km-long tunnel will be built as part of the 5.490 km-long KTLR, and it will run through the Kharghar hills. It will be a four-lane highway.
The KTLR project seeks to enhance east-west connectivity in Navi Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region area.
The KTLR route will connect Turbhe to Kharghar through Juinagar, running through hills. This enables drivers from Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai to access Kharghar directly, avoiding other routes like Sion-Panvel Highway, Thane-Belapur Road and Palm Beach Road.
This project will reduce travel time by approximately 30 minutes, benefiting motorists from Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai.
The City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) is appointed by the state as the nodal agency that will implement the project. It will take three years for it to be completed.
CIDCO has already completed the Detailed Project Report (DPR), and pre-construction work has begun. The process of obtaining requisite permission from various agencies is now underway.
The project has been delayed due to a financial conflict between the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation and CIDCO.
CIDCO chose to implement the project and shoulder the entire cost of Rs 1282.37 crore after the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation decided not to fund it.
The vice-chairman and managing director of CIDCO, Sanjay Mukherjee, mentioned the crucial steps taken to initiate the KTLR project.
He stated that CIDCO is committed to providing quality and complying with all regulatory protocols. In order to secure forest clearance for the project, the organization has taken several careful and diligent measures to ensure complete compliance with statutory clearances.
"The work initiation depends on receiving all required permissions like land acquisition, resettlement, rehabilitation, and forest clearances," he stated, reports Hindustan Times.
Mukherjee highlighted the importance of the KTLR project, stating that it will connect Navi Mumbai and feature elevated or grade-level approaches for direct connectivity between Turbhe and the proposed International Corporate Park in Kharghar.
