As part of a renewed thrust to increase adoption of solar power, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (13 February) announced that the government is launching the 'PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.’

In a post on X (formerly twitter), the Prime Minister noted that the project, with an investment of over Rs 75,000 crore, aims to light up one crore households by providing up to 300 units of free electricity every month.

It's worth noting that the interim budget for 2024-25 had first outlined the provision for one crore households to receive up to 300 units of free electricity each month through rooftop solarisation.

In his post, the Prime Minister assured that the central government would alleviate any financial strain on the public by offering significant subsidies directly to their bank accounts, along with highly concessional bank loans.

Additionally, the Prime Minister emphasised the integration of all stakeholders into a national online portal.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the importance of incentivising urban local bodies and panchayats to promote rooftop solar systems within their respective jurisdictions, as a means to popularise the scheme at the grassroots level.

“Let’s boost solar power and sustainable progress. I urge all residential consumers, especially youngsters, to strengthen the PM – Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana by applying at — https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in,” the Prime Minister said.
