India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, Tata Motors, won the tender of 200 electric buses floated by Jammu Smart City Limited.
Tata Motors has entered into a strategic collaboration for the deployment of the electric buses in twin capital cities of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), i.e Jammu and Srinagar.
150 units of 9-metre and 50 units of 12-metre Starbus electric buses will be supplied as part of the Government of J&K’s initiative for environmentally friendly public transportation.
As part of the contract, Tata Motors will supply, operate and maintain Tata Starbus electric buses for a period of 12 years.
Already 40 electric buses manufactured by Tata Motors have been plying in Jammu and Kashmir.
Since 2019, 715 electric buses supplied by the company to multiple cities in India have collectively clocked more than 40 million kilometres.
Currently, Tata Motors stands at a strong order book of over 3,800 electric buses.
As part of a tender floated by Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), Tata Motors has already received orders for 1,500 electric buses from Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), 1,180 electric buses from West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) and 921 electric buses from Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC).
“Tata Motors’ state-of-the-art research and development facilities have steadily worked to engineer innovative mobility solutions powered by alternate fuel technology, including battery-electric, hybrid, CNG, LNG and Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology,” the company said.
