Aditya Birla Group’s cement flagship, UltraTech Cement Limited, has crossed 150 million tonne per annum (MTPA) production capacity, with the commissioning of two greenfield units in Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh on Tuesday.
With these additions totaling 5.4 MTPA, the company's total capacity now stands at 151.6 MTPA. The third largest cement producer in the world, now boasts of as much as 150 per cent of the capacity in the United States and 80 per cent of Europe's capacity.
“Reaching this milestone is symbolic of India’s ascent on the global stage and demonstrates the dynamism and scale of Indian corporations,” Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, said.
UltraTech has set a target to achieve 200 MTPA production capacity, Kumar Mangalam Birla said at the company’s annual general meeting last year, following it up with an announcement to invest Rs 13,000 crore for adding 21.9 million tonne to its existing capacity through a combination of greenfield and brownfield expansions.
As part of this, the company has expanded its capacity by 18.7 MTPA over the last 12 months. In addition to that, the ongoing expansion of 35.5 MTPA is actively being implemented across 16 locations.
Furthermore, the company is in the process of closing the proposed acquisition of Kesoram Cement. This will further augment UltraTech’s grey cement capacity to 198.2 MTPA.
UltraTech Cement, had in November last year announced that it has acquired the cement business of Kesoram Industries in a share-swap deal. Kesoram Industries is engaged in the manufacture of grey cement through the Kesoram cement business.
