World-Class Revamp: Sambalpur Railway Station's Rs 348 Crore Redesign Plan Unveiled

With rooftop plaza, food court, kids play zone and other amenities, Sambalpur Railway Station is being redeveloped over 70.92 acres of land as a world-class facility at an estimated cost of Rs 348 crore.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of Sambalpur Railway Station on Saturday, paving the way for the rail premise to be revamped as a city centre in the region to benefit the local tourism and textile-handloom industry of the state.
Inspired from the Sailashree Palace, a nearby palace complex in Balangir in Odisha, architecture of the station building will reflect — "Vikas Bhee, Virasat Bhee" after the redevelopment under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
While number of platforms will increase from four to seven, the flow of daily passengers will also grow considerably. Currently, the station is handling about 11,580 passengers daily, and as per the projection, the number will go up to 27,353 per day in future.
The station redevelopment plan is being finalised keeping the growth of the city and train operation in the next 50 years, said a senior railway official involved with the project.
The 36m wide and 78m long roof plaza will come up over the station for passengers. There will be 21 escalators and 14 lifts at seven platforms.
The seven-storey station building (ground plus six) will come up at the existing one, according to the plan.
Platforms will be having essential facilities like retails, ATM, one station one product, pharmacy, Internet, wash rooms, etc.
The facelift of Sambalpur Railway Station in Odisha will provide improved passenger amenities with modifications to add new lines, platforms, and pit lines.
Upon completion, it will significantly boost train handling capacity with improved passenger amenities, the railways maintains.
There will be an adequate parking facility to be constructed at 14,030 square metre area. Besides, solar panel and water recycling plant will also come up at the revamped station.
