The French government will posthumously confer the nation's highest honour Legion d'Honneur on history teacher Samuel Paty who was beheaded by a 18-year-old radical Islamist for showing cartoons of Prophet Mohammed.

As per reports, Paty will be awarded the top honour for his bravery, a public ceremony will also be held in his honour at the Sorbonne University in Paris.

Paty was beheaded on 16 October in the French town of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine while he was returning from work, by a 18-year-old Chechen Abdullakh-Anzorov.

A photo of the teacher and a message confessing to his murder was found on the mobile phone of the radical Islamist killer.

Paty's killing has seen a swift government crackdown on radical Islamism, with France preparing to expel 231 radicalised foreign nationals and will also be shutting down a mosque which condemned Paty.

The father of a girl student in Paty’s class who posted the video shared by the Pantin mosque is among 15 people arrested after the killing, along with a known Islamist radical and four members of Anzorov family. The father is said to have issue a fatwa against Paty.

Following Paty's death, France has seen a sea of rallies in support of the history teacher, with people pouring out on the streets with messages like We are not afraid, You do not scare us and Je Suis Samuel.
