The Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh appears to be quite clear on fixing the state’s notorious law and order situation. While the earlier government allowed gangsters and party henchmen to run riot across the state, the new establishment seems to be inclined towards ensuring basic rule of law.

News reports from Lucknow say that in the last 2-3 days the state police was involved in over 15 encounters, which led to the death of one gangster and the arrest of 24 wanted criminals. These encounters appeared to have taken place in Muzaffarnagar, Gorakhpur, Bulandshahr, Shamli, Hapur, Meerut, Saharanpur, Baghpat, Kanpur and Lucknow. Reports also indicate that police have recovered locally made firearms, some cash, jewels and cars stolen by the criminals.

The gangster who was killed in Friday's operation was identified as Indrapal, from Ghaziabad. He is reported to have 33 criminal cases pending against his name. He was accused of killing a policeman in 2013 and robbing police arms.

Only last month news reports confirmed that UP policeman had gunned down at-least 30 notorious criminals in ‘encounters’ since March 2017. Over 1,100 criminals had been arrested by September last year with 69 of them locked up under Gangsters Act and a further 54 being booked or arrested under National Security Act.
